Kenya‘s men’s and women’s beach volleyball teams posted positive results on Saturday as qualifiers for the 2022 Commonwealth Games kicked off at the Laboma Beach Resort in Accra, Ghana.
The women’s national team defeated South Africa and Rwanda in their opening two games of Group B before taking the lead ahead of their last game on Sunday.
Kenya’s beach volleyball queens, third in Africa, were drawn in pool “B” alongside Rwanda, South Africa and Mauritius
Women’s pairing Naomi Too and Veronica Adhiambo came from behind to defeat Rwanda pairing Munezero Valentine and Benitha Mukandayisenga 2-1 (17-21,21-18,15-13).
In their second game, Too and Adhiambo extended the good run as they left South Africa
2-0 (21:16, 21:19).
Kenya meet Mauritius in their last group game on Sunday.
In the men’s game, the Kenyan representatives recorded mixed results after losing one game and winning the other.
The men’s duo Ibrahim Odouri and James Mwaniki gave up a one-set lead to fall 2-1 (21-14, 14-21, 15-11) against Gambia, who finished first in Africa in their first game.
However, the pair bounced back and defeated Zambia 2-0 (21-13, 21-09) in the second game of the day.
The Kenya men’s team will conclude their group games on Sunday afternoon with a draw against South Africa.
Kenya is in a difficult Group B with Gambia, Zambia and South Africa.
