The Directorate of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) of Kakamega County is committed to helping potters in the Ilesi region of Shinyalu County improve their skills.
The County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Education, Dr. George Lutomia said the artisans popularly known as the Potters of Ilesi are allowed to enroll free of charge at the local polytechnic and home improvement centers for the required training.
Dr. Lutomia announced plans are underway to set up a kitty to fund the artisans.
He said this after visiting potters on Monday in the Ilesi area of ââIsukha West in Shinyalu sub-district.
The handicrafts are an ancient business of the residents of this area who make a wide range of aesthetic artifacts such as pots and sculptures.
Dr. Lutomia found that home improvement centers can easily stimulate the home industry to flourish, thus fueling the growth of the informal sector.
District TVET director Chrispinus Wamalwa said they will work towards promoting partnerships and links between the craft sector and other sectors such as tourism and industrialization.
