The Mombasa Coastal Secondary Schools games are expected to be different from the previous championships in Mombasa.
Little-known teams upset giants at the county-level games this past weekend, setting the stage for more shocks at the Regionals.
Several schools will make their debuts at the Games and new champions will emerge during the three-day event, co-hosted at Shanzu Teachers Training College and Shimo La Tewa High School.
The focus will be on boys’ basketball and soccer, where new teams defeated district-level giants to make it to the regional finals.
Those surprises reflected a season that was far more open than two years ago, when big teams dominated the 2019 school games from county level to national finals.
The Coast Games will see new champions emerge in a variety of disciplines as teams prepare to qualify for the national games scheduled September 8-13 in Nakuru.
In boys basketball, the Dr. Taita Taveta County’s Aggrey School joins the newcomers who have outclassed former giants Kenyatta Mwatate and the Timbila School. They defeated Timbila in the Taita Taveta County Finals 61-50.
