The county couple recognized as a top farming family
Mr. and Mrs. James W. Bondurant of Route 2, Concord, were presented with the Outstanding Young Farmer Family Award for Southside Area High School in a ceremony held at the 1975 Southside Area Young Farmers and Young Homemakers Annual Meeting in Halifax County. The bondurants were presented with an engraved silver platter and a certificate from the Virginia Bankers Association. They also qualified for the upcoming Outstanding Young Virginia Farmer Family of Virginia Award, which included a cash prize.

Missionary couple speaks at Liberty Baptist
Rev. Jay E. Stewart and his wife Laura Lee Gray Stewart were guest speakers for “Week of Prayer” at the Liberty Baptist Church in Appomattox. After their appointment in May 1964, they served as Southern Baptist missionaries in Kenya. Jay, an evergreen native residing in Roanoke, was the director of the International Publications Service for Eastern and Southern Africa, Nairobi, and Kenya.
ACHS senior receives leadership award
Appomattox County High School graduate Katie Powell received an ACHS Shell Century Theme Leadership Award for 1991-92 based on her completed application and current events exam. Two winners from each state were given a trip to Colonial Williamsburg for a three-day national meeting.

National park hit by downturn in tourism
Appomattox Court House National Park did not recover from a drop in attendance in early summer and ended the traditional tourist season with a drop in attendance of more than 14 percent. Topics cited were a 27-day federal government shutdown, worst central Virginia snowfall in years, competition against the Olympics, and changes to traditional family vacations.
