Senator Calls for Dialogue on Official Salary Review – Kenya News Agency

Migori County Senator George Ochilo Ayacko has urged the Salaries and Compensation Commission to enter into a dialogue with civil servants’ unions to resolve the dispute over the suspension of the salary and allowance review.

Ayacko said union officials should seek appropriate dialogue with the SRC in order to reach a friendly solution that will prevent future strikes and boycotts.

During an interview with KNA in Migori City, the Senator stated that any kind of work stoppage at this point will only worsen the current economic turmoil in the country.

However, he acknowledged that the country’s economy is in tough times and urged all Kenyans to deal with the situation even if experts find a workable solution to stimulate the economy ravaged by Covid-19.

Ayacko believes it is quite difficult to cope with the advice of SRC by the National Treasury to freeze the annual salary reviews as it will hurt low paid employees who are already devastated by the harsh economic realities caused by the pandemic .

The senator said while officials might view the proposal to freeze the salary review as an important step in saving the country’s troubled economy, SRC must find workable and agreed solutions to the impasse.

The Senator blamed the prevailing pandemic and rising debts as the main reasons for the troubled economy, but reiterated that an amicable solution should be found between workers and employers.

Due to the delayed disbursement of funds to the counties, Ayacko urged the county governments to use the limited resources available carefully and to prioritize essential services such as health.
