A traffic police officer died on Sunday morning in an operation to rescue victims of a traffic accident on the Nairobi-Mombasa highway.
The police officer and a male colleague responded to emergency calls from drivers after a Mercedes-Benz truck overturned near a gas station in Athi River, Machakos County.
The driver of the truck going to Nairobi reportedly lost control of the vehicle and strayed from his lane a few minutes before 1 a.m. on Sunday.

According to a police report filed with the Kyumbi Police Station, the truck rolled and overturned on the opposite side of the expressway and spilled its contents in the middle of the highway.
Shortly thereafter, another vehicle, a Nissan Sunny, crashed due to disabilities and spilled contents on the street.
When the officers who arrived at the scene tried to save the accident victims, another speeding car, a Mazda Atenza, crashed into one of the police officers.

The corporal died on the spot.
The body of the deceased was taken to the morgue of Machakos Level 5 Hospital and the three vehicles were towed to the Kyumbi Police Station for further investigation.
